William retired when he was over 70 years old, from Stone and Downer Company of Boston, Massachusetts. He was its president until 1911.
He lived in Boston and Brookline, Massachusetts and had a summer home in Weston. He was a 33rd degree Mason and was buried in the Masonic Cemetery near Boston.

| 12. | William Augustus Munroe was born in 1808 (son of William Munroe and Susanna Barney Grinnel); and died. Notes:
In 1846, the steamer "Atlantic" was wrecked in Long Island Sound. William had the bravery and presence of mind to carry a rope to the shore and improvised a life buoy and saved over one hundred lives, for which he received many tokens of gratitude and appreciation.
He was a man of strict integrity, nobility of spirit, and gave of his means largely to all charitable objects.
