    Notes:

    Thomas received his early education at Stanmore, Middlesex, under Dr. Parr, and at Harrow. He entered Oriel College, Oxford, where he received his B.A. on 4 Dec 1780, M.A. on 15 Jul 1783, B.M. on 14 Jan 1785, and M.D. on 24 May 1787.

    He was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians on 19 Apr 1791, was Censor in 1792, 1799 and 1812, Harveian Orator in 1799, and was named Elect on 28 Nov 1811. On 19 Jul 1787, he was appointed Assistant Physician of Bethlehem Hospital and became Principal Physician on 2 Feb 1792, succeeding his father in that post. He was Principal Physican until Jun 1816 when he resigned in favor of his son, Dr. Edward Thomas Monro. Soon after resigning, he retired from the practice of his profession

    Thomas was a devoted admirer of the fine arts, and the patron of Joseph M. W. Turner, the celebrated English landscape painter, William Hunt, the eminent water-color artist, and others almost equally distinguished. John Ruskin, the great art critic and author, says in his "Notes" on Turner, dated Mar 1878, that "his true master was Dr. Monro; to the practical teaching of that first patron, and the wise simplicity of method of water-color study, in which he was disciplined by him and companioned by Giston, the healthy and constant development of the greater power is primarily to be attributed; the greatness of the power itself, it is impossible to overestimate."

    Thomas attended King George III during his last illness.

  1. 8.  John Monro, Of Fyrish, Contu was born on 16 Nov 1715 in Greenwich (son of James Munro and Elizabeth Hay); died on 27 Dec 1791 in Hadley, Middlesex, England; was buried in St. Mary's Churc, Hadley, Middlesex, England.

    Notes:

    Dr. John Monro, F.R.C.P. was educated at Merchant Tailors' School from 1731 to 1733, at which time he was elected a scholar of St. John's College, Oxford. He received his B.A. from Oxford on 13 May 1737 and his M.A. on 11 Jul 1740. He became a Fellow of the College and in Apr 1741, he was nominated as one of the Radcliffe Travelling Fellows, on which University foundation he continued until 1751.

    He received his B.M. on 10 Dec 1743 and entered the University of Leyden on 10 Mar 1745. He visited Paris, Italy, and Germany, and during his absence, he received his M.D. from Oxford on 27 Jun 1747, having migrated from St. John's to University College.

    On 24 Jul 1751, he was appointed Joint-Physician of Bethlehem and Bridewell Hospital in London, as an assistant to his father, whose health was declining. When his father died the following year, he was appointed his successor.

    John and his first wife, Elizabeth Culling, were married by John's brother, Rev. Thomas Monro, B.D.

    John was a Candidate of the College of Physicians on 25 Jun 1752, and a Fellow on 25 Jun 1753. He was Censor in 1754, 1759, 1763, 1768, 1778, and 1785, and delivered the Harveian Lecture in 1757. His only published writings were his "Harveian Oration," delivered in 1757 and a pamphlet entitled "Remarks on Dr. Battie's Treatise on Madness," a feeling tribute to his father's memory.

    He restricted the practice of his profession almost exclusively to insanity, in the treatment of which he was considered to have attained a greater eminence and success than any of his contemporaries.

    In Jan 1783, he had an attack of paralysis, after which he gradually retired from his practice.

    He lived for a long time at 53 Bedford Square, but in the beginning of 1791, he took up residence at Hadley, Near Barnet, County Middlesex, where he died.
