    Notes:

Colonel James ("General Jimmy") Monroe graduated from West Point in 1815 and in 1839 was elected to Congress.

One reference says that James and Elizabeth were married in 1823.

James acted as the private secretary of President James Monroe.

James and his wife settled in New York City, New York, where he was active in political affairs and was a member of the Peace Convention in 1861.

He raised the four sons of his brother, Augustine Garnett Monroe.

Error alert: The Johnson reference says that James was the son of Andrew's first wife, Frances Garrett. Another reference from Johnson says that James was the son of Andrew Monroe and Ann Bell. James [3751] and James [3587] have the same birth and death dates recorded.

Estimate: This birth date is an estimate based on the birth dates of nearest relatives or contemporaries, or based on other clues such as christening date, marriage date, birth order, etc.

    Children:
    1. George Douglas Monroe was born about 1824.
    2. 1. Frances Monroe was born in 1826 in Of, New York City, New York, USA; died in 1906.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Andrew Augustine Monroe was born in 1764 in Milton, Albemarle Co., Virginia, USA (son of Col. Spence Monroe and Elizabeth Jones); died on 2 Dec 1826 in , Fauquier Co., Virginia, USA.

    Notes:

"Burke's Presidential Families" says that Andrew only had two sons. His first wife was Frances Garnett (or Garrett). Ref 2 says Andrew and Frances had two sons.

Andrew attended William and Mary College in Williamsburg, Virginia.

Andrew is believed to have purchased a farm near Batesville in 1781, where he lived for four years.

He served in the Navy during the American Revolutionary War, and moved to Scott County, Kentucky from Albemarle County, Virginia about 1793.

In 1816 he was living on a farm which his brother, President James Monroe, purchased on Limestone, below Milton.

The Johnson reference says he may have been born in 1764 and may have died in 1826. Ref 4 says he died in 1828.

Several references give Andrew's death place as Milton County, Virginia, but there has never been a Milton County, Virginia. Other references say he died in Fauquier County, Virginia.

There is much confusion and probably a lot of error in this family record. There is another Andrew Monroe [529] married to another Ann Bell in a completely different family line. Is this an error or just an interesting coincidence? Care must be taken here because of the many similar names at about the same time and place.

  1. 8.  Col. Spence Monroe was born in 1727 in , Westmoreland Co., Virginia, USA (son of Capt. Andrew Monroe and Christian M. Tyler); died in 1774 in , Westmoreland Co., Virginia, USA.

    Notes:

Captain (or Colonel) Spence Monroe resided on Monroe Creek, Westmoreland County, Virginia, having moved there by 1752. He was the father of President James Monroe. He was a signer of the Westmoreland County resolutions protesting against the Stamp Act.

His son, President James Monroe, said that his father, Spence Monroe, was "a worthy and respectable citizen possessed of good landed and other property."

    - Monroe, James Harrison

    - Johnson, Monroe
    - Spence Monroe notes
    - Descendants of Edward Blair Cabell

Ref (1) says Spence was the son of Andrew [3544].

A plausable theory espoused by Virginia R. Redden in ref 2 says that Spence may have been the posthumous son of Spence Monroe, the first husband of Christian Tyler. The will of Christian Tyler's first husband, Spence, mentions two small children and one unborn child. Most historians believe that the "unborn child" died young, but Redden believes that the child may have been born after Christian's marriage to Andrew Monroe and that the child was named Spence after his deceased biological father.

Spence left a will dated 1774, but there is no date of probate.

Ref (3) calls him Andrew Spence Monroe.

  2. 9.  Elizabeth Jones was born in 1729 in , King George Co., Virginia, USA (daughter of Jones); died in 1806 in Fredericksburg, , Virginia, USA.

    Notes:

Elizabeth was the daughter of James and Hester (Davis) Jones of Wales. She was the sister of the Honorable Joseph Jones of Virginia, a member of the Continental Congress.

Her son, President James Monroe, said that his mother, Elizabeth, was "a very amiable and respectable woman, possessing the best domestic qualities of a good wife, and a good parent".
