Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Rev. John Monro, Jr. was born in 1662 (son of Rev. John Monro and Christian Blair); died on 23 Sep 1725.

    Notes:

Rev. John Monro may have gone to Virginia with his brother, Andrew, about 1690 after they both completed their educations as clerics in England. They were of the Church of England.

In 1692, he served as Rector of Hunger's Church near Eastville, Northampton County, Virginia. In 1702, he was Rector of St. John's Parish in King William County.

He may have been a minister in Pomunkie Neck.

One reference says his wife was Mary Blair, daughter of John Blair.

The death date given for John is the same as that for his wife, Christian. There may be an error there. Also, the Boyer reference says that John's wife was Christian Blair. Since that is the same name as his mother, there may be an error here, too.

Error alert: The Boggs reference says John was a son of David Munro III of Katewell. Most references say John was David's grandson.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Rev. John Monro was born in 1620 in , , , Scotland (son of David Munro, III of Katewell and Agnes Munro); died in 1724.

    Notes:

Rev. John Monroe studied for the ministry in England and migrated to Virginia in about 1650. For several years, he was minister of St. John's parish, Pomunkie, King and Queen County, Virginia (probably Pomunkey Neck, between the Pomunkey and Mattapony Rivers.)

He witnessed a disposition by his brother Alexander Munro of Katewell in 1688.

John married, Christian the daughter of Commissar Blaire. The supposed birth dates of Christian and John's two sons may be in error or Christian may not have been their mother.

The following is from Mackenzie's "History of the Munros of Fowlis" - p. 31

John studied for the Church and emigrated to America, his brother Andrew being there before him, where for several years [he served as] minister of Pomunkie, Virginie. He married there, with issue - several children, whose descendants, according to the late Alexander Ross, lived and are still numerous in the United States. Probably one of his sons was the Rev. Andrew Monro, minister of the Established Church, Virginia, on record in 1696, and named after his uncle, Major Andrew. A Rev. John Monro, appears as a rector in Northumberland County, Virginia, in 1692."
