Alexander was a native of Scotland. He emigrated to America sometime before 1758.
During the American Revolution, he was a United Empire Loyalist. He joined Major Jessup on the North River in 1776 with a party of 85 Loyalists. He served in Hugh Munro's batteaux Company at Saratoga, and later fought elsewhere throughout the war.
