During the Civil War, William served in the 117th New York Volunteers from 8 Aug 1862 to 27 Jun 1865. He carried a small pocket Bible in which he listed 32 fights and battles in which he participated. He fought in South Carolina, Virginia (taking part in the seige of Petersburg), and ended up in North Carolina at Durham's Station where the 117th regiment received the surrender of the Confederates at Bennett's house.

During its Civil War engagements, the 117th regiment sustained the loss of seven officers and 123 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded. An additional officer and 135 enlisted men died from disease and other non-battlefield causes. Throughout all of this, William only had the heel of his shoe shot off. One time, he was hauled off for dead when a cannon ball killed the man next to him and the blast knocked him unconscious.

William worked for Jeffrey Manufacturing Company.
