He served in the American Civil War from 16 Sep 1862 to 13 Jul 1863 as a Private in Capt. William A. James' Company E, 11th Regiment, Rhode Island Volunteers.

He lived at 29 Spring St., and 59 Lester St. in Providence, Rhode Island. He was married in the High Street Baptist Church, Providence, Rhode Island, by the Rev. George R. Darrow. He died at 35 Central Street in Providence.

In the 1870 census, the value of Thomas' estate was estimated at $300. In 1875, he was living at 59 Lester Street (Ward 6 or 8). In 1885, he was living at 69 South Street.

He was a business head in the company of "Munroe and Legg" located at 17 Dyer Stree, Providence, Rhode Island, during the middle and late 1800's, a teaming business. His partner, George O. Legg, lived at 130 Lester Street. His wife, Louisa Legg was the sister of his business partner.

The following is an obituary of Thomas Munroe which appeared in a local paper:

"Thomas J. Munroe died Monday morning at the home of his son-in-law, Orin S. Mowry, 64 Bridgham street, aged 92 years, two months and six days.

He was the last of a long-lived line dating back to an ancestry of Scotch barons, and in this country, to forbears who served the nation in many walks of life.

Mr. Munroe was born in Rehoboth, grew up there and learned the trade of a stone mason. He worked at his trade in a number of places, helping to build among other things the forts in Boston Harbor and the old Tockwotton Hotel on Tockwotton Street in this city. Sixty years ago he entered the teaming busi- ness with a partner under the firm name of Munroe & Legg, and for 10 years of the time he was connected with this business he served as night watchman of the Bank of North America. He retired from business 12 years ago.

He was married about 1831 to Louise Legg, a sister of George Legg, and his (..unreadable..) children were born to them of whom six survive. There are also 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Munroe was a member of Eagle Lodge I.O.O.F., which he joined in 1842, and of Moshassuck Encampment I.O.O.F. He was for some time connected with Hand Engine No. 2 in the days of the volunteer fire department in this city. He was a member of Trinity Methodist Church. Old age and pleurisy united to put an end to his long life.

The genealogy of the Munroe family dates back through a line of Scotch barons to the 11th century. Among the more immediate ancestors were Richard Warren, who came to this country in the Mayflower, and Col. Benjamin Church, the hero of King Phillip's War. Mr. Munroe's father served in the Revolutionary War. The family is noted for longevity, many having passed the 90 mark."

The 1885 census of Providence, Rhode Island is a bit confusing. It shows a Thomas J. Munroe age 72 and wife Julia A. age 60 living with son George W. age 24 and daughter Mary E. age 26. These names don't match up with information from other sources. It appears to be the right Thomas Munroe, but with different family members. I've entered Julia as a second wife of Thomas and the mother of the two children.

Died:
The Beckett reference gives Louisa's death date as 8 Jun 1818, which is impossible, but it also says she was born in 1813 and lived to be 75 years old, so her death date is probably 8 Jun 1888.

Notes:

It is not certain which of Benjamin's children were from which wife. It is possible that he was only married once, both wives actually being one person.
