Although descendants of Sarah have said "Perly Podister" was a Captain from "Glasgow, Scotland" no information supports this. He is identified on the marriage record as a native of Jersey Island. Podister, Puddester, etc. were all variations of the old French name POINGDESTRE (meaning 'right hand')found in the Channel Islands and also in Newfoundland. Capt. J.B. Poddister may have been Master of a vessel transporting for the fishing industry between Newfoundland, Paspebiac, Gaspe' and Jersey Island and ports in Europe.
