    Notes:

At the age of 15, Francis entered the military school in Columbia but stayed only a short time. He went to Yorkville to be with his older brother. He entered the Coward-Jenkins Military School there and stayed two years.

After leaving Yorkville, he went to Lauriburg, North Carolina, where he attended the high school, studying Latin and French, preparing for the study of medicine. A few years later, he entered a medical college in New York where he sstudied medicine for two years. He left New York during the John Brown raid when most southerners left the area, entering Charles Medical College in Charleston, South Carolina, where he completed his study of medicine in 1860.

He began practicing medicine in 1861 in Marion, South Carolina, but enlisted in the army at the outbreak of the U.S. Civil War later that year. He became ill just before his regiment left, so he was unable to accompany it. He enlisted again the next year and was sent to Arkansas to Price's Army. He was with Price's Army on their march through Missouri, and he fought with them in the battles of Fort Smith, Iron Mountain and others. He held the rank of Captain and served as aide-de-camp.

He returned home at the close of the war and moved from Marion to Latta, South Carolina and began practicing medicine there. He was engaged in the mercantile business and also in farming, but the greater part of his time was spent as a physician.

He was very active in civic and religious affairs, especially in the early days of the Latta community. He was the promoter and financer of the first church in the town.

Francis retired from the practice of medicine in about 1905 and spent the last years of his life at his home, seldom going the half mile to town.

Dr. Franklin "Francis" Marion Monroe was one of Latta, South Carolina's oldest and most respected citizens when he died at his home at eight o'clock on the morning of 26 Oct 1910. He was buried in the town cemetery the next day.
