In Feb 1668, Hugh's brother-in-law, William Mackay, was on his way to Orkney when he was seized at Dunnet by the Earl of Caithness. He was carried to Thurso and imprisoned in a loathsome dungeon where he was confined for some time and barbarously treated. He was ultamately released and sent home in an open boat, but on the day after his arrival, he died from the effects of his treatment.

In March 1668, William Sinclair of Dunbeath, a cousin of the Earl of Caithness, invaded Lord Reay's country and kidnapped Hugh, his brother William, and his uncle William of Rosehall. He took them to Caithness and imprisoned them in Castle Sinclair, in pits and foul dungeons, where he left them confined for several weeks.

As Hugh's brother-in-law, Hector was on the way to Edinburgh the following August, he was waylaid and assassinated in Aberdeenshire by William Sinclair of Dunbeath and John Sinclair of Murkle, who were cousins of the Earl of Caithness.

In Dec 1668, Hugh Munro, John Lord Reay, and John, Earl of Sutherland lodged a complaint against the Earl of Caithness before the Court of Justiciary. The complaint cited the murder of William and Hector Mackay, and the invasion and kidnapping.

To meet this complaint, the Earl of Caithness raised a counter action against the complainers, alleging several crimes extending back as far as 1649. In both actions, the respective parties were summoned to appear in Court the same day on 10 Dec 1668.

It was found that the complaint lodged by the Earl of Caithness was based on false information and was abandonded. The other complaint was settled by a compromise agreeable to both.
