    Charles, who assumed the name of Monro, and ultimately succeeded his uncle in the estate of Allan. His father, mother, and he resided in the meantime at Kingsmills, Inverness.

    VIII. Charles Mackenzie Monro. He was a Captain in the Ross-shire Fencibles, and married first, in 1773, Mary, daughter of Hugh Macleod, II. of Geanies, by his wife Ann, daughter of Dr Duncan Fraser, III. of Achnagairn, and sister of the wife of Andrew Ross, fourth of Pitkerie, mother of George Ross, of Cromarty, the "Scotch Agent" mentioned in the "Letters of Junius," without issue. Charles married, secondly, in 1803, his first wife's cousin, Catherine, eldest daughter of Hugh Houstoun of Creich, County of Sutherland, and grand-daughter of Isabella, daughter of Sir George Munro, I. of Newmore, ancestor of Sir Hector Munro of Fowlis, the present Baronet, with issue--

    1. David, his heir and successor.

    Charles died in 1819, when he was succeeded by his elder son, IX. David Monro,

    2. Anne Monro was born about 1807; died on 10 Nov 1895 in Lingfield, Surrey.
    3. David Monro, Of Allan was born in 1808; died on 18 Dec 1893.
    4. Charles Monro was born in 1811; died about 1896 in Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada.
    5. Williamina Houstoun Monro was born in 1813; and died.
    6. Katherine Houstoun Monro was born in 1814; died on 24 Dec 1869 in Ilfracombe.

    3. Margaret, described as "heretrix of Allan" after the death of her elder brother, David, unmarried in 1767. She was born about 1707, and married in 1740, Charles Mackenzie [Note: Her husband was John Mackenzie. See above.], descended from the family of Fairburn, with issue--

    Notes:

    Joseph's wife was the daughter of David Ross of Balblair. Joseph may have died later than 1713.

    VI. Joseph Monro, so named after one of his mother's relatives in Ireland. He was in constant financial trouble, consequent on the debt inherited by him from his brother along with the estate, and which he was not able to pay off. He married Elizabeth, only child of Captain David Ross of Balblair, parish of Edderton, with issue--

    1. David, his heir and successor.

    2. Andrew, who died in infancy.

    Joseph died in 1713, when he was succeeded by his only surviving son, VII. David Monro,

  1. 12.  David Monro, of Allan was born est 1625 in Of, Meikle Allan (son of Andrew Monro and Margaret Ross); died about 1680.

    Notes:

    The wife of David Munro of Meikle Allan was the daughter of John Davis of Whitehall (near Carrickfergus), and the granddaughter of Sir John Davis, attorney-general for Ireland.

    One reference says "Captain D. Munro of Meikle Allan in the Earl of Rothes Horse was slain at the Battle of the Boyne." But he was dead by 1674.

    "This version from Teaninich and Culcairn copies has been preferred to the original MS, which is overwritten to read: 'Captain D Munro of Meikle Allan in the Earl of Rothes Horse was slain at the Battle of the Boyne. He married a daughter of Davis of Whitehall and had issue'. But David was dead by 1674; his widow Marie Davis, mother of his son John, was living 1692, her father said to be John of Whitehall near Carrickfergus son of Sir John Davis (1569-1626) attorney-general for Ireland."

    [Note: R. W. Munro says that David was dead by 1764 ("The Munro Tree (1734)" by R. W. Munro - (1978) - L/95) so he could not have been slain at the battle of Boyne in 1690.]

    IV. David Monro, who, born in 1640, entered the army, and was Captain of a regiment of horse raised by the Earl of Rothes, in which he served for some time in Ireland, where he was killed at the battle of the Boyne in 1690.

    On his death in 1690, Captain David was succeeded by his eldest son, V. John Monroe,
