  1. 2.  J. Peter Munroe was born on 12 Dec 1812 in , Moore Co., North Carolina, USA (son of Dugald Munroe and Jane Cameron); died on 17 Jan 1888 in Sandy Grove, Cumberland Co., North Carolina; was buried in Fort Bragg, Hoke Co., North Carolina, USA.

    Notes:

Peter was an accomplished teamster, master builder, farmer and good businessman from near Fayetteville, North Carolina, who believed in education and American patriotism.

He had five sons and one daughter. One of his sons was killed in the Civil War. He put all the rest of his children through college. Three of his sons became Presbyterian ministers.

Peter built the Pee Dee Presbyterian Church in Hoke County in 1846, the Sandy Grove Presbyterian Church in 1852, the Montpelier Presbyterian Church in Wagram in 1852, and in 1855 he built a church for the Presbyterians living in the area that became Raeford. This church was known as Bethel, a classic old church with a beautiful rounded dome instead of a steeple. The last church he build was the Galatia Presbyterian Church in 1862. A fascinating feature of this church was the placement of the steeple on the slant side of the roof over the entrance doorway. This church burned and was replaced by a handsome colonial brick building.

Peter also built the Montgomery County Courthouse and the Laurinburg Academy.

He was an elder in the organization of the Sandy Grove Presbyterian Church near Fayetteville, North Carolina. He and his wife were buried there.

There is a Peter Monroe [25480] married to Isabella Cameron [25481], but listed as a son of John Monroe [524]. There is probably an error here somewhere.

The Love reference says Peter's 1st wife, Isabella was born 5 Apr 1818 and died 18 May 1891. Other references give 18 May 1891 as the death date of his second wife.
