Daniel may have gone to North Carolina from Scotland. He received land grants from three Royal Governors. He was involved in the Massacre at Piney Bottom during the American Revolutionary War.
He operated a toll bridge over the Little River, a grist mill and a tavern, called an "ordinary". During the American Revolutionary War, the Patriots destroyed Daniel's bridge to slow the British army. Later, they paid to rebuild the bridge on the condition that Daniel no longer collect tolls.
