Traverse Pioneer, 102 Years Old, Dead

Northport, Oct. 2--John Monroe, Sr. 102, oldest pioneer of the Grand Traverse region, is dead at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Barnes.

With the death of this pioneer, who bore a striking resemblance to the martyred president William McKinley, comes the first break in a four-generation household. The daughter, her son Delbert, 49, and the latter's son Virgil, 21, all live in the same dwelling.

Mr. Monroe was born at Inverness, Scotland, Nov. 20, 1820. He took out naturalization papers 57 years ago and filed on a homestead at East Jordan. Later he followed gold mining in Australia and the Klondike and built the first dam over the Pine river at East Jordan. A man of Herculean strength and size he often carried a 500 pound load without effort.

Nine of fourteen children survive: John Monroe, Jr., East Jordan; Mrs. Anna Miles, Ellsworth; Alex Monroe, Detroit; Mrs. Hattie Matthews, Toronto, Can.; Mrs. Mary McIntosh, Tacoma, Wash.; Joseph Monroe, Mayger, Ore.; Henry Monroe, Astoria, Ore.; Augustine Monroe, Northport, and Mrs. Elizabeth Monroe, Northport.

When we talked at the Clan Munro Gathering in Tallahassee earlier this month, you kindly offered to send me a print-out of references regarding my great-grandfather, John Munro, and his antecedents. His number in your book is 10,200. I was puzzled that his entry indicated he was born in Trois Rivieres, Canada (Ontario?), because my information from family sources indicated he was born in Inverness, Scotland.

I am enclosing a copy of a newspaper clipping from my mother's scrapbook) which gave his birthplace as Inverness. [The clipping was probably from a newspaper printed in Traverse City, Michigan.] Another clipping enclosed regards the death of Augustus Munro, John's son, and my mother's father [probably from a Leelanau County publication]. I realize that newspapers contain errors and inaccuracies. Witness the misspelling of John "Monroe" throughout the article, and changing Augustus Munro to "August" (he was called "Gus" informally). The article about John Munro stated incorrectly that he left a son, "Augustine."

However, my family's oral tradition related that John was from Inverness. That included stories told by my mother as well as her several sisters and brothers.
I had heard that John's wife was named Marceline (or Marcelline) and that he met and married her in Paris. However, I had not heard that hes father and grandfather were both named Daniel. Nor had I ever heard the names of their wives: Pelagie Zaste and Mary Anne LaBrie. They sound like refugees from a romantic novel, don't they? They certainly could be French-Canadian. Definitely not Scots. Mysterious!

Also enclosed are photos of the tombstones of John and Augustus in the cemetery at Northport, Michigan. They may serve to verify dates and spelling of names.

John married Marcelline Lalonde on 24 Jan 1847 in Normanby, Grey Co., Ontario, Canada. Marcelline was born on 20 Aug 1829 in St. Polycarpe, Quebec, Canada; was christened on 21 Aug 1829 in St. Polycarpe, Quebec, Canada; died on 20 Jan 1895 in East Jordan, Charlevoix Co., Michigan; was buried on 11 Feb 1895 in East Jordan, Charlevoix Co., Michigan.
