    Notes:

Pfc. James Howard Monroe served with a company of the 1st Cavalry Division of the U.S. Army in Vietnam. On 16 Feb 1967, his unit's position came under fire near Bong Son. Responding immediately to calls for help from wounded men, he moved forward through heavy small arms fire, but found that all of the men had died. He then crawled back through the heavy fire to answer other calls for help. While treating a seriously wounded radio operator, he saw a live grenade fall directly in front of the position. He shouted a warning to all those nearby, pushed the wounded aside and lunged forward to smother the grenade's blast with his body. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor on 17 Oct 1968. His parents received the medal at the Pentagon from Stanley R. Resor, Secretary of the Army.
