In 1850, Gilbert was living with his widowed mother in Lodi, Michigan. He married Parmelia E. (or Pauline W.) Waterman. He served in the Civil War and eventually settled in Saline Township where he served as Commissioner of Highways. He then moved to Pittsfield, Michigan where he went into a profitable business with his brother-in-law, George E. Waterman.
