  1. 1.  Henry C. Monroe was born about 1847 in , , Indiana, USA (son of John Monroe, II and Amelia Slye); died on 8 Jun 1863 in Millikins Bend, Louisiana.

    Notes:

    In 1850, Henry and his sister, Mary, were living in Marion, Indiana with Elizabeth Hawkins (age 58).

    On 22 Oct 1862, Henry enlisted to serve in the Civil War. The reference says he was 20 years old at the time which would place his birth in about 1842. Census records say he was born about 1847. It is not known which reference is more correct.

    He served in Company I, 54th Regiment of the Indianna Infantry. He died of disease in a Hospital in Louisiana.

    Notes:

    Rev. John Monroe's wife was a first cousin of President Andrew Jackson. She was the daughter of Margaret (Kelch) and Samuel Jackson.

    John was a Methodist minister (not ordained). He traded a yoke of oxen for a farm in New Jersey, but when the farm proved to be a mountain, he left and moved to Allegheny County, Maryland near Cumberland in about 1794 or 1795. The Eldredge reference attributes this story to his father.

    Notes:

    References differ on Robert's birthplace. Some say he came to New Jersey from Scotland with his parents. Others say he was born in New Jersey in about 1750. One reference says his father was a first cousin to President James Monroe, but unsubstantiated claims like this abound.

    He had eleven or twelve children. Four of his sons became Methodist ministers.

    He was supposed to have traded a yoke of oxen for a farm in New Jersey. But it proved to be on a mountain.

    in 1785 or 1795, he moved to Allegany County, Maryland (one reference says Alleghany County, Virginia, and the Eldredge reference says it was probably Cumberland County). He bought property just across the Potomac River in Hampshire County, Virginia (now Mineral County or Hampshire County, West Virginia) and died in Hampshire County, Virginia (now West Virginia). The property was sold by his son, Robert, in 1810.

    One reference says his wife died in Rich Hill Township, Muskingum County, Ohio.

    His mother's name may have been Mehitible.
