    Notes:

James received his early education at the high school in Hardwick (1832) taught by Rev. John Goldsbury. In 1835, he went to the Wesleyan Academy in Wilbraham. At the age of 18, in 1836, he taught in Greenfield, Massachusetts.

He very much wanted to attend college to make himself a better teacher, but the means were not available to go. He spent most of the year of 1837, working with his father on the farm. His mother and sister worked to earn money to help with his education, and he finally graduated from Yale on 21 Aug 1845, the oldest member of the class. While at Yale, he was a diligent student and above average in his studies.

After graduation, he went south and taught as principal in schools in Milledgeville and Macon, Georgia, eventually earning enough to repay his sister for helping him through college. But after two years, his health began to fail and he returned home to Hardwick, where he spent a year or more in recruiting.

In 1849, he resumed teaching in Hyannis, Massachusetts and in 1850 at Barnstable, then back to Hyannis in 1851, each time serving as principal.

In May 1852, he went to California and settled at Rockville, near Suisun Sity, Solano County, California, where he was again engaged in teaching at the academy there. He began attending the Methodist Church and became a prominent leader and an efficient superintendent of the Sunday-school. He also was an active member of the Odd Fellows.

Some time before his death, he became a regular contributor and part proprietor of a paper published in Sacramento, California called "The Star of the Pacific" and his influence was fast becoming a power in the area.

His death was caused by an inguinal hernia which was suddenly enlarged because of work he was doing in building a cottage for his family.

    Notes:

Alice was the daughter of John and Grace (Black) Butler.

Alice's father was a man of large mind and means, and of commanding position in society. Finding few, if any, advantages for a liberal education in the schools then existing, he hired a private tutor to teach his children in his own house, thus giving them the best facilities in his power. His children, in consequence, grew up with an educational training superior for the times.

Alice became a woman with few equals in general intelligence and culture. She was possessed of a tenacious memory, and was an indefatigable reader, often spending the whole night in reading.

She was highly esteemed by all who knew her. The minister officiating at her funeral, remarked, "She was the greatest reader in Dardwick; in fact, I don't know but what she was the greatest reader in the County" (of Worcester).
