He was the son of James McWhurter Bruen (1818-1881) of Irvington, New Jersey and Anna Maria Miller (1822-1916).
While he was a theological student at Union Seminary, he taught at a school for young ladies at No. 1 Fifth Avenue.
He lived in Belvidere, New Jersey.
