Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Johnson Monroe was born about 1745 in Lunenburg, Lunenburg Co., Virginia, USA (son of Johnson Monroe); died about 16 Sep 1829 in , Barren Co., Kentucky, USA.

    Notes:

Johnson witnessed the deed for a sale of land in Lunenburg County, Virginia in 1767. On 14 May 1778, he purchased 200 acres in Lunenburg County and on 12 Jun 1783, he and his wife sold 75 acres of this land. There is no record of the sale of the other 125 acres.

It is not known where Johnson was between 1783 when he disapeared from Lunenburg County, Virginia and 1789 when he appeared in Greenville County, South Carolina.

In 1789, Johnson bought 290 acres in Greenville County, South Carolina where his in-laws (Hoopers) had gone. When he sold this land in 1794, the deed says "Johnson Monroe of Pendleton County", Kentucky.

Johnson (or John) is listed on the 1790 census of Greenville County, South Carolina. His household consisted of one son over 16, three sons under 16, three daughters and a wife. This doesn't quite match the family we have listed here, which should have been three sons under 16, two daughters and a wife.

Johnson appears on the tax lists in Barren county, Kentucky in 1799 so apparently he lived in Pendleton county from 1794 to 1799.

Either Johnson or his son, Johnson, Jr. was the first Methodist minister at Methodist Church near Monmouth Cave, Kentucky.

Johnson's wife, Amelia died after 1830. She was the daughter of Obediah Hooper.

The identy of Johnson's father is not certain. Some references say his father may be William of Lunenburg Co., Virginia [1555] and at least one reference says his father was named David. The Randy Scott Monroe reference says Johnson was the son of John Monroe (b. 1714, d. 1790), but that may have been another person named Johnson Monroe. There is some confusion in this area.

The Carolyn Monroe reference says that Johnson's father was struck by a falling tree limb and killed before Johnson was born. The reference says that Johnson was named for his father.

The following is from the Donald Patrick Monroe reference and was written by Col. Paul B. Monroe, Jr., USAF (Ret.):

"Johnson Monroe was a native Virginian who tried South Carolina first, before settling west of Cave City, Kentucky (ca. 1800). His ancestry probably dates back to Andrew Monroe (d. 1668) whose wife, Elizabeth Alexander, came to America in the mid 17th Century. Andrew's father might have been David Monroe ( b. ca. 1600) from Scotland. Johnson Monroe's parents might have been William Monroe and Mary Smith from Halifax County, Virginia and his wife's parents were Obediah and Massalva Hooper, he being a Revolutionary War veteran who established the Daughters of the American Revolution."
