Ira Thomas Monro

Notes:

Ira married, Margaret, the daughter of Thomas King Wilson and Cristina Neysmith Thorburn. Margaret came to America with her family about 1887 and settled in a little mining town in Pennsylvania. Thomas Wilson was a coal miner and died in Marek in 1914.

1. John Monro was born on 21 Oct 1906 in Troy, , Pennsylvania, USA; died on 27 Dec 1913.
2. Stella Monro was born on 9 Mar 1908 in Sylvania, Bradford Co., Pennsylvania, USA; and died.
3. Josephine Louise Monro was born on 13 Mar 1914 in Sylvania, Bradford Co., Pennsylvania, USA; and died.

Notes:

George was raised in Columbia Township, Pennsylvania. He received an elementary school education and then went to work in his father's store in Sylvania. He worked there for 27 years. On 8 May 1858, he was appointed Postmaster and served in that capacity until he resigned on 1 Oct 1885. He then became a farmer.

He was a member of the Universalist Church and a charter member of Sylvania Lodge, No. 926 I.O.O.F. He was a Republican and in 1860 he was appointed assessor of the U.S. Internal Revenue, a position he held for two years.

George married Josephine L. Embrey on 25 Dec 1879 in Sullivan, Tioga Co., Pennsylvania, USA. Josephine was born on 25 Sep 1853 in Elk Run, Fauquier Co., Virginia, USA; died in Nov 1914. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

Josephine was the daughter of Thomas M. and Ann (Eustace) Embrey of Fauquier County, Virginia. Before marrying George, Josephine had previously been married to a Mr. Johnson.

Notes:

Thomas was baptized at St. Michael's Church by the first Rev. John Usher. He lived for a time on what was known as the Herreshoff farm on Poppasush, Bristol, RI, which was then on the main road of Bristol leading to the ferry.

In his youth, Thomas learned the tailor's trade, but later he became a farmer.

In Oct 1823, he moved to Columbia, Pennsylvania (Sylvania, Pennsylvania) taking the younger members of his family. He lived there until his death in Bradford County.

Thomas married Sybil Borden on 25 Jan 1791 in Portsmouth, Newport Co., Rhode Island, USA. Sybil was born on 8 Oct 1773 in Prob., Portsmouth, Newport Co., Rhode Island; died on 9 Nov 1864 in Columbia, Bradford Co., Pennsylvania, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

Sybil was the daughter of William and Sybil (Smith) Borden, a distinguished family of Portsmouth, Rhode Island.

She is found on the 1850 census of Columbia, Pennsylvania. The census says that she was 75 years old, had $1500 in property, and worked as a "manager of farms." She was living with her son, Abraham.
