Henry Monroe

Notes:

In 1856, Henry was living in Shelby County, Ohio. In 1850, he was a farmer living with his family in Washington, Ohio. The 1860 census shows him in Butler Township, Mercer County, Ohio. Guilford says Henry was born in Ohio.

Although Henry is not proven to be a member of this family, several pieces of strong circumstantial evidence seem to indicate that he is. He was born in the right area, at the right time, and William Harrison Monroe was reported to have a son Henry in other Monroe research publications. Henry named his first son William.

Henry Monroe came to Ohio with his half-brother when he was 21 years of age. This would coincide with the time Henson Monroe came to Ohio, as proven by his children's birth locations. This same information was related by David S. Monroe, son of Henry, to his granddaughter, Wilma Monroe. Since there is so little information about William Harrison Monroe's family (only that he had nine sons and one daughter -- information found in his Revolutionary War penson records) it is possible that there were two marriages, and that Henry and Henson were indeed step-brothers.

There is a possibility that this record is a composite of two individuals. It is also quite possible that Henry was the son of Bretanna, William Harrison Monroe's other wife.

Henry married Mary Jane Miller on 3 May 1838. Mary was born about 1822 in , , Pennsylvania, USA; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

2. Martha Ann Monroe was born in 1840 in , , Ohio, USA; died on 1 Oct 1869 in Of, Washington Twp., Shelby Co., Ohio.
3. James H. Monroe was born on 17 Sep 1842 in Lockington, Shelby Co., Ohio; died in 1933 in Of, Butler Twp., Mercer Co., Ohio; was buried in 1933 in Swamp College, East Section, Coldwater, Ohio.
4. John H. Monroe was born about 1844-1846 in , , Ohio, USA; and died.
5. Nancy J. Monroe was born on 24 Apr 1847 in , , Ohio, USA; died on 11 Jan 1883 in Of, Butler Twp., Mercer Co., Ohio; was buried in 1883 in Ellis Cem., Montezuma, Mercer Co., Ohio.
6. George Monroe was born on 23 Dec 1852 in Of, Butler Twp., Mercer Co., Ohio; died on 21 Mar 1876 in , Miami Co., Ohio, USA; was buried in 1876 in Burntwood Cem., Coldwater, Mercer Co., Ohio.
7. David S. Monroe was born in 1859; died in 1941; was buried in 1941 in Swamp College, West Section, Coldwater, Ohio.

Notes:

William served as a soldier in the Revolutionary War. In order to secure his pension, he requested his neighbor, General John C. Hunter, to certify his service. General Hunter's letter confirmed his service and also mentioned that William had raised eight children.

In 1850, William was a farmer with $3500 in property living with his family in Washington, Ohio.

It is quite possible that this record is a composite of two individuals. Guilford says William was born about 1776.

In 1760, John and Sarah deeded land to Thomas Monroe in Fairfax County, Virginia.

He lived in Truro Parish, Virginia and was one of the early settlers of Oakton, Virginia and was a neighbor of General John C. Hunter. He had other children who were minors when his will was recorded on 28 Jul 1785. He left everything to his widow except his house and land which were bequeathed to his son, William.

In 1786 there is record of payment to one Andrew Monroe from the estate of John Monroe, Gent.

The Watson Monroe reference says John's father was "Andrew (1708 ?- ?)".

John's will was dated 28 Jul 1785.
