  Stella was the daughter of Cornelius and Margaret (Hanaghan) Gahagan of Austin, Minnesota. The original family name was Geoghegan, but Setlla's grandfather, John Henry Geoghegan (1830-1895) changed the spelling to Gahagan after the family settled in Austin, Minnesota in 1870.
